Aluminium foam, also known as foamed aluminium, is used in many applications and industries. Below are just a few examples and their benefits in each. For more examples and information, please refer to the Applications section.
- Mechanical Applications (e.g., structural components, impact/energy absorbers)
- High strength-to-weight
- Customizable strength
- Isotropic compression
- Thermal Applications (e.g., heat exchangers)
- High surface area per unit volume
- Creates turbulence in flowing fluids which minimizes boundary layers and promotes mixing to enhance thermal performance
- Custom conformal shapes/geometries to optimize size and weight
- Filtration and Media Separation (e.g., air-oil separators, flame arrestors, baffles)
- Tortuous path for media/debris to pass through
Benefits of aluminium foam:
Aluminium foam is a lightweight porous metal material with numerous bubbles based on aluminium. It also features metallic phase bubbles and is a promising physical functional material.
The manufacturing method mainly involves adding additives into pure aluminium or aluminium alloy and foaming. Because metal has higher stiffness than plastic, theoretically, aluminium foam of the same thickness can absorb more energy than foam made of PVC.
Of course, as a hot new material, foam aluminium is bound to have its own advantages:
1.Lightweight and high stiffness. The density of the aluminium foam is about 0.1-0.4 times that of metallic aluminium, but its bending resistance can reach 1.5 times that of steel.
2.Good thermal performance. The thermal conductivity of closed-cell aluminium foam with a porosity of 80%-90% is 0.3-1W/ (MK), equivalent to marble. Under the condition of forced convection, the heat conduction effect is excellent.
3.It preserves aluminium corrosion resistance, has low moisture absorption, no ageing and is non-toxic.
4.The processing and installation are very convenient. Aluminium foam can easily be cut, bored and cemented, made into various shapes through grinding tools, treated like ordinary aluminium, and can also form a large, lightweight, high-stiffness plate.
Foam Substrate, often known as aluminium foam, is used in numerous applications and sectors. Here are just a few examples, along with the advantages of each. Please see the Applications section for more information and examples.
